About the Author Karen Terry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Law, Police Science, and Criminal Justice Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Executive Officer of the Doctoral Program in Criminal Justice of The Graduate Center, CUNY, at John Jay. She holds a doctorate in criminology from Cambridge University. Dr. Terry has several publications on sex offender treatment, management, and supervision, including: SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION AND COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION: A "MEGAN'S LAW" SOURCEBOOK (Civic Research Institute), and SEXUAL OFFENSES AND OFFENDERS. She has been involved with numerous research projects regarding sexual offenses and offenders. Most recently, she was the principal investigator for a national study on the nature and scope of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church from 1950-2002, and she is continuing research on the causes and context of the abuse crisis. Karen is also the editor of the periodical Sex Offender Law Report, published bi-monthly by the Civic Research Institute.

This is a solid, well-written book, and all the other ones are comparatively terrible for one reason or another.For the sake of comparison:Mick Bramich's Absolute Beginners' Concertina-- Seems to use a bizarre tab system, is REALLY short, and seems to waste a lot of time on information that would have been useful when it was published but now can be easily found on wikipedia.Bob Kail's Best Concertina Method Yet-- as others have stated, this is a very bare bones collection of songs and exercises. It's cheap and would be a great SUPPLEMENT to Coover's book, but don't make it your primary.Mel Bay's Deluxe Concertina Book by Frank Converse-- this has all the problems that old school Mel Bay methods tend to have (too long on simple tunes, boring tunes, very little explanation for anything tricky written with the assumption you'll have a teacher, etc) with none of the benefits (being comprehensive). Like Kail's book, it would be worth playing through when you've completed Coover's book (there are some interesting chord-heavy pieces in the back), but this is a rough place to start.In contrast to all of the above, Coover's book has easy to read, modern diagrams, lots of explanation without being overly patronizing, and covers considerably more ground than the other books. It's the only one of the books I've mentioned here that covers the top row of the 30 button.It seems like every concertina book uses its own variation on tab, so at least Coover's book is easy to read! If you can already read music and have played another instrument, it's mostly just a matter of getting used to the layout (major triad on push, other notes on pull...) and Coover's tab is supportive and doesn't seem like something you'll become dependent on. Get this one first, and then skim the other ones when you're done with it.

Wow, I was able to start play the very first lesson right away. I found the book to be very clearly presented.. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to play right away. Thank you very much .

Helpful small book for a beginner. At the start is easy to follow but it gets a little more complicated as progressing throughout the book...don't know how it'll go after the first row or when learning how to play cords. Sure do wish there was a concertina teacher I could employ for a few one on one lessons but I searched my state and there is just no one. The book has been most helpful in figuring out the basics for now.

This is a very good beginner book with tablature that makes learning easier. Some of the songs are on you tube played by Mr. Coover which is helpful if you have never heard the song before. I wish Mr. Coover would record "The Sweetness of Mary" on you tube. It is a beautiful song but even after listening to others play it I'm having trouble learning the song the way he wrote it. Please Help!

Carter virtually ignores the broad question of integrity in business, but he does have interesting, if sometimes convoluted, thoughts on the role of integrity in marriage. From Library Journal Integrity is defined in one standard dictionary as a "steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code." Carter (law, Yale) writes of integrity as first among the virtues that define good character. He defines integrity operationally as consisting of three traits: knowing the difference between what is right and wrong; acting on the knowledge of that difference; and an open and public commitment to acting on that difference. Carter writes of everyday experiences, of events in his own life, and of major public events, in which displays of integrity may or may not be apparent. These lead to discussions of the possibility of requiring that people always act with integrity and to the place of traditional visions of Christian integrity in public discourse. None of this seems particularly novel or too controversial. It also seems that much of this has been treated, perhaps in other forms, in Carter's earlier books, most notably in The Culture of Disbelief (LJ 9/1/93) and The Confirmation Mess (LJ 5/1/94). Few will dispute Carter's (The Culture of Disbelief, 1993, etc.) passionate assertion that integrity is a good thing. He is also in favor of honesty, civility, and democracy (and by extension, Mom and apple pie). Integrity, in his conception of it, is a kind of ber-virtue, for it involves, ``discerning what is right and what is wrong [and] acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost.'' To make sure everyone knows that you have integrity, you should also announce ``that you are acting on your understanding of right from wrong.'' Carter is aware of all the traditional problems with integrity (doesn't a fanatical Nazi have integrity?), and in his legalistic way, the Yale law professor enunciates a series of carefully couched codicils designed to close off such immoral loopholes. But as is the case with many legal arguments, these are not so much convincing as they are clever. Carter's understanding of integrity is also both too wide and too shallow. Trying to fluff his simple thesis to book length, he covers in excessive detail such trivialities as sportsmanship and college recommendations. He is also, for a moralist, startlingly parochial. His eight-principle program for improving democracy (apart from ranging far beyond integrity) has limited application. Most of his examples are narrowly American-focused, and some are so current as to be meaningless. His thoughts on American involvement in Bosnia, for example, are already out of date. While he gives obeisance to Aristotle and Locke, he also avoids much of the major philosophical work on integrity.
