Amazon.com Review

There may be a corner of the world where the name J.R.R. Tolkien is unknown, but you would be hard-pressed to find it. Since their publication, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been published in every major language of the world. And though he single-handedly gave a mythology to the English and was beloved by millions, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien remained refreshingly unchanged by his fame and fortune, living out his days simply and modestly among the familiar surroundings of Oxford College. Humphrey Carpenter, who was given unrestricted access to Tolkien's papers, brilliantly puts meat to the bones of the Tolkien legend in J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, offering a well-rounded portrayal of this quiet, bookish man who always saw himself first and foremost as a philologist, uncovering rather than creating the peoples, languages, and adventures of Middle-Earth. Carpenter chronicles Tolkien's early life with a special sensitivity; after losing both parents, Tolkien and his brother Hilary were taken from their idyllic life in the English countryside to a poverty-ridden existence in dark and sooty Birmingham. There were bright points, however. A social and cheerful lad, Tolkien enjoyed rugby and was proud of his gift for languages. It was also at this time that he met Edith Bratt, who would later become his wife. Academic life--both as a student and professor--is where this biography shines. Friendship with other men played a huge part in Tolkien's life, and Carpenter deftly reveals the importance these relationships--his complex friendship with C.S. Lewis, membership in the Inklings and the T.C.B.S.--had on the development of his writing. The only criticism one can make about this book is that Carpenter tends to gloss over Tolkien's contributions to comparative philology. True, there is a chapter devoted to Tolkien's academic pursuits, but it tends to skim too lightly over the surface for this reviewer's tastes. Philology is a terribly methodical science, and the author clearly did not want to alienate readers who were primarily interested in Tolkien as a storyteller. Still, it would be nice to understand why Tolkien was held in such high esteem by his fellow academics. As it stands, Tolkien comes off as a slightly eccentric etymologist. Fans who want to delve even deeper into Tolkien's life should pick up a copy of Carpenter's The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. --P.M. Atterberry

This biography of J.R.R. Tolkien was a birthday gift sent to me by my boyfriend. who knows I have read the Lord of the Rings many times as has he.Tolkien's biography is a journey much like his legendary tale. His beginnings are smple, and a his journey through life becomes an adventure . That help create such a spell-binging author. This biography is not stuffy and dry, sharing with the reader, rather it shares little glimpses of Tolkien's life throughout every stage. The author does a good job of giving the emotion that draws you just like a good novel. It is a book that will appeal to all fans of Tolkien's book. My personal opinion that this book would be helpful to students doing book reports.I know that it is one of a few biograghies which I will read again. So, it would also be my highest reccomended book to date.**Edited For Clarity

I have only read J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy and have obviously seen the films. The books are amazing in many ways and being able to read about the man behind them was a privilege. What's interesting is the amount into the time, effort and the challenges that Tolkien had with LoTR over the 16 years it took from writing to publication.Yet this book is far from being focused just on the LoTR. It provides a background of Tolkien's life from birth to death, his natural ability with languages, his family, the war, Oxford and being appointed professor at the age of 32 among many other accomplishments. This book is a very easy read and uncovers the intriguing life of J.R.R. Tolkien.Three Key Takeaways from the book:1. Good friends with C.S. Lewis2. Lord of the Rings took 16 years from writing to publication3. J.R.R Tolkien was known to most people as Ronald

Who was J.R.R. Tolkien? This question has been posed by many over the years, which may explain the plethora of books and articles written about him (especially in light of the Lord of the Rings movies some ten years ago).In 2010, I read Humphrey Carpenter's The Inklings. I've posted my review of that elsewhere on this site. J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography is of equal quality to that later work, though the primary focus here is on the creator of Middle Earth. The following are among the "new" insights I found in this work:1. Edith Tolkien, though a friend of Joy Davidman, felt jealousy over her husband's devotion to C.S. Lewis (perhaps in part because "Jack" was socially awkward in her presence).2. Though a perfectionist, J.R.R. Tolkien often experienced difficulty in focusing on a given task (which lead to frequent publication delays).3. Tolkien disliked the adaptation of the Catholic Mass into the vernacular from Latin.4. Tolkien's mother knew Latin, French, and German, and he related most closely with her side of the family. He and his brother were homeschooled by their mom at a young age, and Tolkien could even read by the age of four.5. Tolkien lost both parents before he was a teenager; a local priest, Father Francis Morgan, proved indispensable in filling a great gap in both Tolkien boys' lives.6. He treasured his friendships with other males from school days, time in the army, and career as an academic.7. J.R.R. Tolkien did not own a car after World War II. Thus, he had to arrange taxis for himself and his wife.8. He was grieved by the "different breed of men, less discursive, less sociable in the old way, and certainly less Christian" (239) who replaced his generation of scholars at Oxford.9. Tolkien's great works all developed in a different manner. The Simarillion was the first major story he began, but also the one he never completed. The Hobbit took the shortest amount of time to complete. The Lord of the Rings series suffered from endless starts and stops until he settled on its contents and publisher. This book contains simply some of the finest narrative storytelling one can find anywhere. Of particular interest is the section on "Tolkien's typical day" that parallels the "imaginary" Inklings meeting in The Inklings. There is also an insightful account of how C.S. Lewis came to faith in Christ through his friendship with Tolkien.

A completely wonderful book. I enjoyed reading it from cover to cover.I had already known a fair amount about Mr. Tolkien, bit and pieces gathered here and there. I even enjoyed his letters (again, compiled by his son Christopher and Mr. Carpenter)., but this book gave me more a glimpse into not only the daily life of Mr. Tolkien, but also his creative genius and his workflow. It was a delightful book about a very delightful, yet curious man. I only wish I could have known him in real life.

A very thorough look at the personal life of JRR Tolkien, and a good view of his writings, including some previously unseen. Every Tolkien fan should have a copy of this book, but I gave it only 4 stars because the writing style, at least for me, seemed a bit stilted. I found myself rereading passages because I felt I hadn't quite gotten out of them what I should have learned. It may just be me, though, so don't pass by this book on my say-so alone.

Carpenter's biography is excellent. It is a pleasant reading experience that focuses on the man and does not try to speculatively psychoanalyze his literary work, although the biographical facts can indeed help in deepening understanding of the literary work. For example, I, for one, learned the fascinating fact that Tolkien's priest-guardian, after his widowed mother's untimely death, was half-Spanish, spoke Spanish fluently, and let the young Tolkien peruse his Spanish books--facts that led me to consider more closely the parallel between Frodo and Sam and that other adventurous duo, Don Quixote and Sancho. Good biographies of writers give us the plain facts, without overmuch speculation, to enrich our reading and understanding of a writer's works. Carpenter has done exactly that. In Carpenter's other book which collects the letters of Tolkien, Tolkien remarks on his love of the Spanish language--more evidence for one more insight into this great writer's masterpiece.

Review

“I would warmly recommend this book to anyone interested in competitive mathematics or exploring an algebraic approach to Euclidean geometry, and teachers will find it a treasure trove of beautiful questions for enthusiastic students. Both authors richly deserve their reputations as problem selectors of great taste and discernment.” (Dominic Rowland, The Mathematical Gazette, Vol. 100 (549), November, 2016)“The target audience of the book is high school and undergraduate students. There is a large list of exercises with solutions, some taken from Mathematical Olympiad competitions. Thus the book is also a valuable resource for teachers and those interested in mathematical competitions. The first half of the book presents the complex numbers and their geometric properties in depth. The second half is a collection of exercises with solutions.” (Stefan Ulrych, Mathematical Reviews, October, 2014)"The main purpose of this book is to stimulate young people to become interested in mathematics … . This book is a very well written introduction to the theory of complex numbers and it contains a fine collection of excellent exercises … . the targeted audience is not standard and it ‘includes high school students and their teachers, undergraduates, mathematics contestants such as those training for Olympiads or the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, their coaches, and any person interested in essential mathematics." (Vicentiu D. Radulescu, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1127 (4), 2008)"This book is devoted to key concepts and elementary results concerning complex numbers. … It contains numerous exercises with hints and solutions. … The book will serve as a useful source for exercises for an introductory course on complex analysis." (F. Haslinger, Monatshefte für Mathematik, Vol. 149 (3), 2006)"The book is a real treasure trove of nontrivial elementary key concepts and applications of complex numbers developed in a systematic manner with a focus on problem-solving techniques. Much of the book goes to geometric applications, of course, but there are also sections on polynomial equations, trigonometry, combinatorics.... Problems constitute an integral part of the book alongside theorems, lemmas and examples. The problems are embedded in the text throughout the book, partly as illustrations to the discussed concepts, partly as the testing grounds for the techniques just studied, but mostly I believe to emphasize the centrality of problem solving in the authors' world view.... The book is really about solving problems and developing tools that exploit properties of complex numbers.... The reader will find a good deal of elegant and simple sample problems and even a greater quantity of technically taxing ones. The book supplies many great tools to help solve those problems. As the techniques go, the book is truly From 'A to Z'."   ―MAA“It is for the readers who seek to harness new techniques and to polish their mastery of the old ones. It is for somebody who made it their business to be solving problems on a regular basis. These readers will appreciate the scope of the methodological detail the authors of the book bring to their attention, they will appreciate the power of the methods and theintricacy of the problems.”(MAA REVIEWS)"Both of the authors are well-known for their capacity of an integral point of view about mathematics: from the level of the school, through the university level, to the scientific results. The theory appears strictly connected with the problems, the hardest world contest included. Both of them have a very rich experience in preparing Olympic teams in Romania and in the United States."… A significant list of references and two indexes complete the book. I strongly recommend the book for pupils, students and teachers." ―Dan Brânzei, Analele Stiintifice

When I first started reading the book it looked like a typical math book with the kind of math proofs that I hated in high school and college. But I soon warmed up to the book and am learning all kinds of great things about complex numbers. Some of the proofs and exercises are beyond me but most is just clever algebra. I highly recommend this book,

Good book, especially for introductory complex geometry. The theory of complex numbers is built up in black and white, no frills (i.e. don't expect to find any silly historical notes or color pictures typical of modern textbooks) and I have a feeling that the reader who even thinks about buying this book would prefer it this way. The mathematical exposition is generally concise, clear and rigorous. The only problem with the book is the occasional error. But the only errors I have found are minor in the sense that 1)There are very few of them and 2)They are numeric (The process is correct but the answer is wrong because of some simple arithmetic mistake).

Fast delivery many thanks. The book is a must for any complex numbers enthusiast.

Actually I didn't buy this book but just download it from Stanford's library's website. Hopefully it's legal. I mean, it's Stanford's website, right? But I have to thank the author for writing such a great book. I didn't learn much about complex numbers in my high school, and don't feel comfortable with my college complex analysis textbook, so I got this book to build a firm foundation for my complex analysis class. As a Math major, I really love the way this book is written. It's so well-ordered (well, I didn't mean that well-ordered in Mathematics, you get the idea-_-), so clear and every step is backed by reasons. IT MAKES SENSES! Anyway, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to take complex analysis because a lot of us don't have enough knowledge about complex numbers but the complex analysis class is based on the assumption that we are already masters of it.

Mathematics is amazing not only in its power and beauty, but also in the way that it has applications in so many areas. The aim of this book is to stimulate young people to become interested in mathematics, to enthuse, inspire, and challenge them, their parents and their teachers with the wonder, excitement, power, and relevance of mathematics. This book is a very well written introduction to the fascinating theory of complex numbers and itcontains a fine collection of excellent exercises ranging in difficulty from the fairly easy, if calculational, to the more challenging. As statedby the authors, the targeted audience is not standard and it "includes high school students and their teachers, undergraduates, mathematics contestants such as those training for Olympiads or the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, their coaches, and any person interested in essential mathematics." The book is mainly devoted to complex numbers and to their wide applications in various fields, such as geometry, trigonometry or algebraic operations. An important feature of this marvelous book is thatit presents a wide range of problems of all degrees of difficulties, but alsothat it includes easy proofs and natural generalizations of many theorems in elementary geometry. The authors show how to approach the solution of such problems, emphasizing the use of methods rather than the mere use of formulas. Of course, the more sophisticated the problems become, the more specific this approach has to be chosen. The book is self-contained; no background in complex numbers is assumed and completesolutions to routine problems and to olympiad-caliber problems are presented in the last chapter of the book. The aim of the core part of each chapter is to develop key mathematical ideas and to place them in the context of novel, interesting, and unexpected applications to real-world problems. The first chapter deals with complex numbers in algebraic form and leads up to the geometric interpretations of the modulus and of the algebraic operations. The second chapter deals with various applications to trigonometry, starting with elementary facts on the polar representation of complex numbersand going up to more sophisticated properties related to $n$th roots of unity and their applications in solvingbinomial equations. Chapter 3 is devoted to the applications of complex numbers in solving problems in Plane and Analytic Geometry. This chapter includes a lot of interesting properties related to collinearity, orthogonality, concyclicity, similar triangles, as well as very useful analytic formulas for the geometry of a triangle and of a circle in the complex plane. Chapter 4 contains much more powerful results such as: the nine-point circle of Euler, some important distances in a triangle, barycentric coordinates, orthopolar triangles, Lagrange's theorem, geometric transformations in the complex plane. This chapter also includes a marvelous theorem known in the mathematicalfolklore under the name of "Morley's Miracle" and which simply states that "the three points of intersectionof the adjacent trisectors of any triangle form an equilateral triangle". As stated in the book, this theoremwas mistakenly attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte. The proof of this theorem follows directly from Theorem 3 on page 155, a deep result which was obtained by the celebrated French mathematician Alain Connes (Fields Medal in1982 and Clay Research Award in 2000),in connection with his revolutionary results in Noncommutative Geometry. Chapter 5 illustrates the force of themethod of complex numbers in solving several Olympiad-caliber problems where this technique works very efficiently. This very successful book is the fruit of the prodigious activity of two well-known creators of mathematics problems in various mathematical journals. The big experience of the authors in preparing students for various mathematical competitions allowed them to present a big collection of beautiful problems. This book continues the tradition making national and international mathematical competition problems available to a wider audience and is bound to appeal to anyone interested in mathematical problem solving. I very strongly recommend this book to all students curious about elementary mathematics, especially those who are bored at school and ready for a challenge. Teachers would find this book to be a welcome resource, as will contest organizers. This book is meant both to be read and to be used. All in all, an excellent book for its intended audience!

Goes over the basics of complex numbers from A to Z and is absolutely loaded with examples and practice problems. I wish it was more proofs and less practice problems, but that's just a personal preference.

Comprehensive and yet concise enough to cover lots of material. Lots of wonderful questions to challenge any math problem lovers.Highly recommended.

This is a complete work about complex numbers. Perfect for Mathematical Olympiads. A lot of difficult problems.

This book is mostly a layman's exploration of quantum physics. I've read several such books and I felt this one added to my understanding. That wasn't quite what I was looking for, but it made the book worth reading. I didn't feel that the writer made his point at all--that being: "You are the Universe." In truth, when he finally began to attempt it, he just kind of hemmed and hawed, I thought, and never laid it out. I still don't know whether it was a valid point of an unconvincing point because I never found where he made the point. He kind of danced around it. I get it that without an observer there really is nothing to see. I'd already figured that out on my own simply via logic. I think what he was trying to say was that the universe sort of created itself, within itself (which includes humans), just by being. That kind of circular logic doesn't work very well for me--but maybe I misunderstood.

Here's a science book that is of urgent interest to non-scientists, because it can change the way we live by helping us change the paradigm with which we see the world. Throughout Deepak Chopra's career, he has believed that many aspects of everyday life need to be re-examined. He was proved right when he argued for the mind-body connection thirty years ago, at a time when mainstream medicine either rejected or ridiculed the idea that our thoughts influence our bodies.Mainstream physicists might reject or ridicule the concept that our thoughts influence the cosmos, which is the main theme of this book, but the book was written with physics professor Menas Kafatos, so the science is solid. You Are the Universe means what its title says. The reality we inhabit is shaped by our own experience, and if there is such a thing as another reality apart from our raw experience, we will never know it. And what would it even mean to say reality can be independent of experience? Such a radical thesis puts the physics establishment on notice, using its own methods. The book outlines the key mysteries that physics hasn't solved, such as what came before the big bang, which is like asking what happened before the beginning of time. Chopra and Kafatos are bold enough to broach forbidden and politically incorrect questions like whether there is design of the universe (while strictly distancing themselves from any religious view, especially Intelligent Design). What surprised me is how deep the unsolved mysteries go and how credible a human universe actually is. In the tradition of quantum physics, as the authors point out, physical reality was radically revised, and some of the pioneers of quantum physics seriously doubted the things we take for granted about existence--matter, energy, space, and time--are even remotely like what our common-sense ideas of them are. Solid physical objects, for example, turn into clouds of energy at the quantum level before dissolving into probability waves and finally vanishing into the quantum void. The fact that the universe was born out of nothing--the quantum vacuum--opens the way for describing the pre-created state in many ways.Chopra and Kafatos touch on some of the current theories in physics as well. They point out that modern physics theories provide descriptions that are based on arcane mathematics, such as superstring theory, and which have almost zero empirical evidence to prove the case one way or the other. The same holds true for the fashionable multiverse theory, which theorizes trillions of alternate universes that will never be seen or measured. The authors argue that the pre-created state of existence is consciousness, the source of not only everything physical but everything mental as well. While the idea of a conscious universe may not be new, even among some highly-respected cosmologists, but I don’t believe the case has been made anywhere else so thoroughly and so closely directed at personal transformation.Despite the presence of Chopra's name, this isn't a spiritual book. It is highly readable pop science that exposes the hidden presumptions behind subject-object based knowledge, so that the role and presence of consciousness is recognized for what it is. The authors conclude with a plea for a new paradigm based on this reality that can save the planet and open the door to the next step in human evolution. Higher consciousness won't become widespread, they say, until we absorb a deep yet simple truth. Everything in creation is an activity in consciousness, and we humans sit at the center of a universe tailored to our awareness. We are thus co-creators of our own reality, at this very moment. It's an inspiring and an empowering message, that feels more relevant and urgent than ever.

Deepak Chopra and Menas Kafatos have written a masterpiece in 'You Are the Universe.' This highly readable and infinitely intriguing book, offers a roadmap to our very existence. It combines spirituality with hard science, and addresses the pertinent questions about our very reason for being. What is our purpose, why are we here, what role do we play in the cosmos; these are important questions that are thoughtfully explored in this book. The material presented here is perhaps the most important and enlightening that you'll ever read.

Awesome book and despite the subject matter being complex at times, the authors did a great job relating hard to understand scientific concepts with real life analogies. The greatest sages and prophets throughout time have espoused the same things but did not have the science to go along with their teachings. As stated in the headline, Stephen Hawkins needs to change his book from "The Theory of Everything" to "You Are Everything." If we humans had the capability to see the smallest subatomic particles, when we looked at trees, houses, other humans,...everything would look the same. You wouldn't see an outline of a human, the inside of the human, or things outside the human. The "inside" of the body would look just like the "outside" of the body. There would not be a location for "me or I." There would be no inside/outside concept. The sun, trees, plants,... are just as important to us as any organs "inside" our bodies.I read a one star review for this book that related it to the same snake oil Deepak has been preaching for 40 years. My question, how did snake oil work? How does the placebo work? Where is the mathematical equation for the effect of the mind on the cells in the body? And if the mind can effect cells that are inside the body why wouldn't it have the same effect on things "outside" the body? Thank God (as the expression goes or in this case the Universe) that we do have the observer effect in quantum mechanics. Maybe the greatest breakthrough in science - along with this book!

Dr. Chopra hit his peak with Quantum Healing and How to Know God. You Are the Universe goes on and on about scientific nonsense while really saying absolutely nothing. The entire book can be summarized as "You are the universe because you have consciousness." Disappointing. And yet, I keep reading. I recognize that Chopra is attempting to add new ways of thinking about science and metaphysics; there are sound points to ponder about energy, time, and eternity if you can get past the unnecessary detail.
