First published in 1976, The Widow's Children, with its unpalatable family wistfully gnashing at one another, has long defied critical desciption. Now that it's been rereleased, with a fine new introduction by Andrea Barrett, it's time again for readers to approach this spare--yet unsparing--novel. Approach with something like terror, or at least a tremulous respect, for Paula Fox's tale of one family's massive, various history awes with its marvelous compression. We learn these people inside and out in just one evening. Divided into seven chapters ("Drinks," "Corridor," "Restaurant," "The Messenger," "Two Brothers," "Clara," "The Funeral"), the book tells of the Maldonadas, Spanish-Cuban immigrants to America who now find themselves middle-aged and living in the past, galvanized only by sister Laura's emotional excesses. "These people," notes Peter, a friend, "had not signed any social contract."

Laura leads her husband, Desmond, her brother, Carlos, her daughter, Clara, and Peter a not-so-merry dance through one acrimonious dinner in a pretentious Manhattan restaurant. Practically the only ugly truth she doesn't manage to dredge up is the one she learned that very afternoon: Alma, Carlos and Laura's mother, has died in a nursing home. But the plot is not what we think about when we say this is a very, very good novel. Fox's marvelous control and formalism ultimately give The Widow's Children its strange, singular power. She has a poet's ability not just to imply unsayable mysteries but to imbue the unsaid with treachery, wit, emotion, and irony, all hanging in a vaporous cloud. Each character in turns speaks a pained monologue; we don't like them--we don't, in a sense, even care--but we can't stop watching this elaborately choreographed car wreck.

Along the way, Fox gets off a number of good ones, as in this desciption of a neighbor: "a tall muscular man who entered into and departed from rooms quickly, athletically, as though following a secret program of body building." Her wit leavens our impatience with these difficult people. And that's a clever swindle, for she then delivers a chilling tale with infinite grace. This is in no way an expected novel. --Claire Dederer

Andrea Barrett is the author of The Air We Breathe, Servants of the Map (finalist for the Pulitzer Prize), The Voyage of the Narwhal, Ship Fever (winner of the National Book Award), and other books. She teaches at Williams College and lives in northwestern Massachusetts.

About the Author

Dr. Larry Turyn is a professor of mathematics and statistics at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he has taught for 31 years. He earned degrees from Brown University and the Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. He has also been a Fellow and sessional instructor at the University of Calgary. At Wright State University he has developed several courses in engineering mathematics, differential equations, and applied analysis. Nan Shepherd was a college professor, novelist (3 published works) and poet. This book is the last work she published, towards the end of her life. It is a paean to her love of the countryside where she spent most of her life, The Cairn Gorm mountain range in Northern Scotland. Brilliant, lyrical, a great tribute to the human spirit and Man's relationship to his (and her) environment. This belongs on every bookshelf, next to Gilbert White's "The Natural History of Selborne." This edition contains an overly long Foreword that attempts to tell us that we are going to enjoy reading Nan Shepherd's words. Skip it and just read her words. Or read it AFTER reading her words.

Nan Shepherd's book about her lifelong love of the Cairngorm mountains is quite marvellous. I was drawn to it by reading Wild Places by one of my favourite authors, Robert MacFarlane. He knew & admired Nan Shepherd. She writes with great passion , knowledge & experience. Even if mountains & walking do not interest you, I believe you will enjoy getting to know the author & seeing that really experiencing & loving one landscape can be deeply fulfilling, deeply interesting.

When I started this book I did not know what to expect. I started at the beginning but soon found that I wanted to jump right into her words and not read through the intermediary introduction. I found myself marking passage after passage, laughing out loud, and being stung by the beauty of her words. Even though I know nothing of the lambs she references she brings them alive.

Ms Shepherd can really write, and this is the culmination of a lifetime wandering the Cairngorms. A long lovely prayer to a great mountain range, and after writing it, she sat it aside for 30 years to age, like a fine Single Malt Whiskey. And by the way, some of the worlds finest Single Malt's are made in, or immediately adjacent to the Cairngorms. And the water she write of so beautifully that flows out of the Cairngorms, goes into those great Scotch's. A great book to read to someone you love on one of those night's when the Moon, or the Demon's, interrupt sleep.

Arrived quickly, well packaged. It looks like the cover has been beaten up a bit, but the book is fantastic.

Easily one of the best books I've ever read. She makes the subject come alive, so that you can see, smell, hear and feel the Scottish mountains.

The book did take a while to get to me from England, but that's alright. It was well worth the wait. Nan Shepherd is a true ecological genius ahead of her time. I strongly recommend you read any of her work you can get your hands on.

I received this as a gift and loved it. Within a few pages, I was googling flights to Scotland.

At first, all of the creatures are silent, but then two parrots caw and squeak, a hyena chuckles and chortles, some monkeys screech and chatter, and a hippo splashes and squelches. However, none of these outbursts is loud enough to disturb the baby, and the disappointed lion finds himself growing very hungry. When Papa's stomach begins to rumble and growl, "Loud as a banging drum," Leo wakes up crying, and the king of the jungle faces his angry wife and sheepishly takes responsibility. The text is simple and descriptive and the use of repetition and rhythmic language make the story perfect for sharing aloud. The colorful cartoon artwork is packed with humorous details. Papa's facial expressions, which range from pompous to grumpy to embarrassed, are a hoot. An energetic, lighthearted tale that will have children roaring with laughter.
