About the Author

DR. BERNARD SKLAR has over 40 years of experience in technical design and management positions at Republic Aviation, Hughes Aircraft, Litton Industries, and at The Aerospace Corporation, where he helped develop the MILSTAR satellite system. He is now head of advanced systems at Communications Engineering Services, a consulting company he founded in 1984. He has taught engineering courses at several universities, including UCLA and USC, and has trained professional engineers worldwide.

PREFACEThis second edition of Digital Communications: Fundamentals and Applications represents an update of the original publication. The key features that have been updated are:

  • The error-correction coding chapters have been expanded, particularly in the areas of Reed-Solomon codes, turbo codes, and trellis-coded modulation.
  • A new chapter on fading channels and how to mitigate the degrading effects of fading has been introduced.
  • Explanations and descriptions of essential digital communication concepts have been amplified.
  • End-of-chapter problem sets have been expanded. Also, end-of-chapter question sets (and where to find the answers), as well as end-of-chapter CD exercises have been added.
  • A compact disc (CD) containing an educational version of the design software SystemView by ELANIX accompanies the textbook. The CD contains a workbook with over 200 exercises, as well as a concise tutorial on digital signal processing (DSP). CD exercises in the workbook reinforce material in the textbook; concepts can be explored by viewing waveforms with a windows-based PC and by changing parameters to see the effects on the overall system. Some of the exercises provide basic training in using SystemView; others provide additional training in DSP techniques.
The teaching of a one-semester university course proceeds in a very different manner compared with that of a short-course in the same subject. At the university, one has the luxury of time—time to develop the needed skills and mathematical tools, time to practice the ideas with homework exercises. In a short-course, the treatment is almost backwards compared with the university. Because of the time factor, a short-course teacher must "jump in" early with essential concepts and applications. One of the vehicles that I found useful in structuring a short course was to start by handing out a check list. This was not merely an outline of the curriculum. It represented a collection of concepts and nomenclature that are not clearly documented, and are often misunderstood. The short-course students were thus initiated into the course by being challenged. I promised them that once they felt comfortable describing each issue, or answering each question on the list, they would be well on their way toward becoming knowledgeable in the field of digital communications. I have learned that this list of essential concepts is just as valuable for teaching full-semester courses as it is for short courses. Here then is my "check list" for digital communications.
  • What mathematical dilemma is the cause for there being several definitions of bandwidth? (See Section 1.7.2.)
  • Why is the ratio of bit energy-to-noise power spectral density, Eb/N0 , a natural figure-to-merit for digital communication systems? (See Section 3.1.5.)
  • When representing timed events, what dilemma can easily result in confusing the most-significant bit (MSB) and the least-significant bit (LSB)? (See Section 3.2.3.1.)
  • The error performance of digital signaling suffers primarily from two degradation types. a) loss in signal-to-noise ratio, b) distortion resulting in an irreducible bit-error probability. How do they differ? (See Section 3.3.2.)

This second edition is intended to provide a comprehensive coverage of digital communication systems for senior level undergraduates, first year graduate students, and practicing engineers. Though the emphasis is on digital communications, necessary analog fundamentals are included since analog waveforms are used for the radio transmission of digital signals. The key feature of a digital communication system is that it deals with a finite set of discrete messages, in contrast to an analog communication system in which messages are defined on a continuum. The objective at the receiver of the digital system is not to reproduce a waveform with precision; it is instead to determine from a noise-perturbed signal, which of the finite set of waveforms had been sent by the transmitter. In fulfillment of this objective, there has arisen an impressive assortment of signal processing techniques.

    The book develops these techniques in the context of a unified structure. The structure, in block diagram form, appears at the beginning of each chapter; blocks in the diagram are emphasized, when appropriate, to correspond to the subject of that chapter. Major purposes of the book are to add organization and structure to a field that has grown and continues to grow rapidly, and to insure awareness of the "big picture" even while delving into the details. Signals and key processing steps are traced from the information source through the transmitter, channel, receiver, and ultimately to the information sink. Signal transformations are organized according to nine functional classes: Formatting and source coding, Baseband signaling, Bandpass signaling, Equalization, Channel coding, Muliplexing and multiple access, Spreading, Encryption, and Synchronization. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on system goals and the need to trade off basic system parameters such as signal-to-noise ratio, probability of error, and bandwidth expenditure.

    ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK

    Chapter 1 introduces the overall digital communication system and the basic signal transformations that are highlighted in subsequent chapters. Some basic ideas of random variables and the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) model are reviewed. Also, the relationship between power spectral density and autocorrelation, and the basics of signal transmission through linear systems are established. Chapter 2 covers the signal processing step, known as formatting, in order to render an information signal compatible with a digital system. Chapter 3 emphasizes baseband signaling, the detection of signals in Gaussian noise, and receiver optimization. Chapter 4 deals with bandpass signaling and its associated modulation and demodulation/detection techniques. Chapter 5 deals with link analysis, an important subject for providing overall system insight; it considers some subtleties that are often missed. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 deal with channel coding—a cost-effective way of providing a variety of system performance trade-offs. Chapter 6 emphasizes linear block codes, Chapter 7 deals with convolutional codes, and Chapter 8 deals with Reed-Solomon codes and concatenated codes such as turbo codes.

    Chapter 9 considers various modulation/coding system trade-offs dealing with probability of bit-error performance, bandwidth efficiency, and signal-to-noise ratio. It also treats the important area of coded modulation, particularly trellis-coded modulation. Chapter 10 deals with synchronization for digital systems. It covers phase-locked loop implementation for achieving carrier synchronization. A new section, Appendix E, has been added to serve as a short tutorial on s-domain, z-domain, and digital filtering. A concise DSP tutorial also appears on the CD that accompanies the book.

It's clear and intuitive, but covers all the basics: -- chemical shifts for a variety of binding structures, -- the various isotopes, -- line-splitting and spin coupling, -- equilibria in chemical and physical state, -- Overhauser effect,and lots more. In other words, it covers everything needed for more advanced analyses, but does it without dragging the reader through every wave function. Somehow, the author packs all that into fewer than 90 pages without making it all indigestibly dense.To get the book's full benefit, you'll need some background in chemistry, including a little organic, and maybe some physics. You won't need a lot of either - the first or second college course in each should be enough. The treatment uses a little algebra, but not a lot in the direct line of its arguments. The real emphasis is on the basic phenomena: on the concepts of electron shielding, on effects of different kinds of bonding, and on interactions between magnetic nuclei.This book won't make you an analytic chemist. It could help, though. The text is well-suited for a prepared novice. It's illustrated with simple and descriptive diagrams. If you need to get the basic ideas of analytic NMR, fast, this book may be the best around. Other books cover advanced topics like NMR for protein structure. Read this book first, like an introductory chapter, and you'll have a much easier time with those more complex discussions.This much information at this price is an incredible deal - it has my highest recommendation.

    Got my copy of the book 3 weeks ago, I have to say this is one of the best books I've read on the subject.I recommended buying it to anyone who wish to know how O/S really works & find out about all those little things that makes the 'magic" happens after boot/login.The book is NOT for beginners: A prior knowledge of assembly & usage of windows debuggers (such as WinDbg or KD) is recommended.I had some experience with both, though I had some "rust", and it took me some time googling to be reminded of some stuff, and I wish author would put some additional chapter to subject early in the book.As an small example: In chapter 3, there is a deep dive into working example how one could implement a "key logger" into "real mode" via TSR. It would really help if author would give small "intro" to TSR saying "write' performed by placing 25H to AH, DS:DX point to new routine, AL = N & that will hook the new function to slot N. True one could understand that from code & after further check internet for int21 documentation, but again it would make reading much "smoother". I assume someone that uses assembly on daily usage probably seems very obvious...The book is filled with real "gems" as to HOW O/S works, what's get loaded first, who calls who, what registry key to watch out for if someone were to add to list of "Known" DLLs etc. And even though I'm not "security specialist" (I more an hobbyist), I really learned ALOT from this book.I'm a software engineer for over 8 years, and I must admit only now I understand certain compiler flags & concept like ASLR, /GS & DEP...The author takes a chapter to explain one thing at a time, and at the end of the chapter he provides some sort of "overall review", usually inside simple to understand chart/diagram that will help the user deal with the enormous amount of information provided.Author provides alot of KD snippets, that demonstrate & proves the stuff he teach, I only wish some small intro chapter were made to those who less know those commands. Again, just to be clear I'm not referring to a "KD for dummies", but it would sure help to add a small reference to the commands used, so that could provide user with quick reference, instead of having to google for it, to understand what it does.On the assembly side snippets, there are occasional some minor errors in the code snippets, like MOV/PUSH instead of LEA, but I guess that could be to avoid script kiddies to take code & compile right of the book.To sum things up, I really enjoyed reading this book (still reading it...)That's why I'm giving it 5 stars, it deserves it !

    I'm a computer security specialist and wanted to extend my knowledge of programming and computer security to cover rootkits. Despite what many believe to be the wrong way to teach about malware and related areas of computer security, learning how - in depth and fully - a rootkit works programmatically is the only way to develop defensive software and strategies to detect and remove them. This book teaches you all about how rootkits work, in great detail with plenty of code examples that are all written perfectly - no coding errors. The book sits right beside Greg Hoglund's "Rootkits" - both are excellent resources on the topic and the only two around worth reading. This book will teach you how to create a rootkit, to see how it works. It spends a great length of the book going over this and it does so in a very clear and concise way. You will also learn the details of the Windows Operating System and it's architecture - which is invaluable knowledge in-and-of itself. The last chapters of the book detail how to detect hooking and other anti-rootkit detection and removal methods. It's a complete and concise book filled with code and novel ideas on rootkits. I would recommend purchasing this along with Greg Hoglund's book, that will be all you'll need to delve into the complex world of rootkits. You will learn so much about the Operating System as well that this book is well worth the price. I can't say enough about how good it is.

    It's not too often that a hefty 900 page technical book manages to hold your rapt attention on a plane ride. Suffice to say that this managed to do just that and didn't let go till almost from cover to cover.Most of the code is the book is Intel architecture and Windows specific, but the sheer breadth and depth of the topics covered is simply amazing. In fact, for those not interested in rootkits per se, this book might even serve as a companion piece to the Windows Internals book by Mark Russinovich.The one nitpick might be that VMM based rootkits aren't given much coverage, but that should not detract anyone from reading what's easily one of the best (if not the very best) book on the topic.Highly recommended, and mandatory reading for anyone working on Windows OS system componenents or security software.

    This is an excellent resource for those looking to get a well rounded and well thought out view of kernel architecture and rootkit basics. Strangely, this is also one of the VERY few books that provides a good primer on the basics of developing windows NT drivers and basic NT driver architectures. The first Windows Ring 0 code I have ever written turned out to be a DKOM rootkit. There is a TREMENDOUS amount of information about IA32 and the Windows NT architecture up front, don't be intimidated and know that it will be one of the best references available. It is technically very dense and extremely well laid out.I cannot recommended this book more highly. It should be on every professionals bookshelf, right next to "Shellcoders handbook" and the GNU C reference.You will get the most from this book if you don't just copy his code but actually understand the techniques and roll your own.I look forward to Bill's next book dealing with the Longhorn kernel, Linux, OSX, iOS, and Android. Come on Bill you know you want to!

It seems like the author was primarily concerned with covering each subject in depth so that no part of a rootkit was left untouched. It makes for some heavy but worthwhile reading as unlike some other books like it that I have read in the past, this one tries to cover many of the fundamentals of creating a rootkit from the ground up and not just the dissection of a current kit.Overall this is the kind of book you get and add to your library as you will refer back to it many times over the years to come.

    The Este Monuments and Urban Development in Renaissance Ferrara examines the transformation of one of Italy's most important city states as engineered by a succession of Este rulers. During the course of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, individual Este princes constructed and embellished palaces and citadels, founded and supported churches and monastic complexes, and encouraged or sponsored major urban projects, including the famous Ercolean Addition, as a means of glorifying their city and defining their own position within it. In tandem with these projects, four public sculptural monuments dedicated to Este princes were also erected or planned for the city. Set into the context of the urban development of Ferrara, the four projects reveal the role that princely and public patronage played in the process of political self-fashioning and promotion in early Renaissance Italy.
